Enlightenment and Revolution in the Atlantic World

What is the relationship between the Enlightenment and the revolutions that remade the world at the end of the 18th century? How do we think about this question if we leave the salons and streets of Paris – or even Boston – behind, and try to keep the whole of the Atlantic World in view? This presentation will first offer a definition of Enlightenment and will then try to answer the above questions, with reference particularly to events in what would become the United States, France, and Haiti.

Speaker Bio - Eric Brandom

Eric Brandom is a Visiting Assistant Professor and James Carey Research Fellow in the History Department at Kansas State University. His research interests are in the history of political and social thought, especially in France in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to work on Georges Sorel, he has published on French liberalism, socialism, and the poetry and political thought of Aimé Césaire. He lives in Manhattan, Kansas.
